Topinformationen

Dear Freshies,

Welcome to Cognitive Science in Osnabrück. Congratulations on being offered a place in our course of study this semester! We are delighted to inform you about the first weeks of the new semester.

Before the semester starts

The semester starts on April 1st, lectures will start on Monday, April 14th. In the week before the lectures, there is already a really important event: Your Freshie Days.
From April 9th to 11th, we will welcome you to the program and introduce all the important facts, tools, and places to you: The Freshie Days are intended to give you the information you need to successfully study Cognitive Science. You will learn to use the various university online tools, you will be advised on how the study regulation works and how to find the right courses. And, of course, you will learn about Coxi-life around the university! :) Apart from the tutorials, there will be a few welcome talks and socializing events.

Attendance of all of these events is not mandatory, but we highly recommend at least attending the welcome talks and the tutorials, as they are the only proper way to get information on course selection and university procedure. They are essential for you to get the most up-to-date information and the best recommendations for your course choices. Here you will also get all the necessary information on how to register in StudIP, which is the tool for signing up for courses.
Generally, we do advise you to join the events in person, if possible. The welcome talk and tutorials can be attended online, too. You will be able to meet your fellow students in person, but if we can also offer some online socializing - that depends on your preferences.

On Wednesday, 9th April, we will meet at 10:00 am for breakfast in the Schloss Garden, if the weather is not appropriate then we will move indoors. We will meet in person at the Schloss Garden, look for a large group of people with a cognitive science flag. The next event is in the afternoon at 13:00 in building 15 room 134 which is very close to the Schloss garden.

For the students who can't be present in person in Osnabruck, you can join the welcome talks and the tutorials online on BigBlueButton (the conference call software of our university). You can find the link in the Email we had sent to you earlier.

More info on the individual events:
During the Welcome Talk, the CogSci mentoring team and the student body will welcome you to the study program and Osnabrück. You will learn what CogSci is and get a first impression of what studying with us can be like.
At the IKW Welcome Talk, our dean of studies, Dr. Gregor Hörzer, will welcome you to the study program and the institute.
As said above, the Tutorials are the most important events and should not be missed!
The Campus Rally is a fun treasure hunt where you figure out different places and complete tasks with your team to win exciting prizes and get to know the campus.
The Pub Quiz night is a fun event to get to know your fellow students and try to figure out some puzzling questions(completely unrelated to cognitve science)
The Game Night will be the last event of the week where we come together to play some games and have lots of fun!
For the Pub Quiz and the Game Night, we will also invite current students, so you are able to socialize outside your Freshie bubble, too!

Staying connected

Also, please sign up for the institute’s mailing list with your new university mail address (Master students: https://list.serv.uni-osnabrueck.de/mailman/listinfo/ikw-stud.master). More fun stuff

Twice a year, we organize a “class trip” to a castle in the middle of Germany and you are invited! We are having our most amazing Coxi-weekend from the 16th to the 18th of May 2025, so we will have two cozy and cuddly nights at our very own stronghold, lots of food, fun workshops, and plenty of socializing!
You can find more information and the registration link here: https://fs-cogsci.uos.de/summer-ludo-2025/

Important: If you are unable to attend the freshie week either in person or online, please write to the Mentoring Team (cs-mentoring@uos.de) as soon as possible, so we can figure out when to set up a meeting to get you started for your first semester.
If you have any questions or concerns that cannot wait until the freshie week, please send an email to the Student Mentoring Team (cs-mentoring@uos.de)

Please also read this booklet! It will guide you through the magical journey of the next few weeks, months, and years.

See you all soon!
All the best,
