I am a member of the institute of cognitive science and a doctorate program. My field of research is philosophy of cognition, biology and neuroscience.I am currently working on my Phd thesis on the topic of neural selection. The title of my project is :
Some consequences of Neural Darwinism
The interaction with the environment has a very important role in the development of the nervous system. Briefly, the idea proposed in Neural Darwinsim by G. Edelman is that natural selection works on the phenotype as well as on the neural structure. Brain functions might be investigated by referring to its morphological and epigenetic aspects. The neural selection through the evolution is the mechanism responsible for morphological and structural changes in the brain .
Neural Darwinism seems to be a plausible proposal that could build a bridge between biology and other disciplines like philosophy, psychology and ethology. It proposes a multidisciplinary approach to the human cognition, which is also the main aspect in the epistemic foundation of cognitive science.
The goal of my project is to discuss some consequences of neural darwinism, in particular whether the selection and development of neuronal groups lead towards the ontogenetic evolution, and the role that functionality plays in the evolutionary explanation. Does this functionality imply ultimate aspects in evolutionary explanation?
