Syllabus:

Prerequisites: Cognitive Psychology, Introduction to Neurobiology, Action and Cognition I & II This seminar deals with the study of altered states of consciousness (ASCs) in experimental psychology. Since the beginnings of cognitive psychology, researchers were fascinated by different phenomena that severely affect perception and thinking. Multiple experimental approaches were developed to trigger such changes in wakefulness states of subjects, such as sensory deprivation, meditation or pharmacological induction; e.g. by Hallucinogens. With the rise of a new research field - called "computational psychiatry" - these approaches were re-discovered by neuroscience and are used as experimental tool to study consciousness disturbances as they also occur in psychiatric conditions. This seminar focuses on the discussion of induction methods for ASCs, psycho- and physio-metric measurement tools to assess qualitative changes in consciousness as well as their role for current neuroscientific research. Particular attention will be drawn to the discussion of ASC phenomena within the framework of the "Bayesian brain hypothesis".
