The importance of concepts of behavioral medicine for diagnosis, development, and therapy of somatic diseases is illustrated for selected somatic diseases. Original research papers as well as review papers are to be read. In addition to general methodological aspects (such as research designs, interpretation of screenings tests) and relevant constructs (e.g., social support, resilience), biopsychological markers (the role of cortisol in health and disease) concrete somatic states or diseases will be addressed (e. g. chronic pain, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, cancer, AIDS and additional immune-system diseases, gastrointestinal disorders).
