BSc: optional compulsory (Wahlpflichtbereich)
BSc examination field: Computational Linguistics (KOGW-WPM-CL)
MSc: Major subject
MSc major: Linguistics and Computational Linguistics

Prerequisites: Introduction to (computational) linguistics.

In this class, we will study linguistic meaning (semantics and pragmatics) in more depth than you've had in introductory classes of (computational) linguistics. We will first get you familiarized with compositional semantics (Heim and Kratzer 1998), i.e. how the meaning of an expression is computed based on the meanings of its subparts. Then, we will discuss topics that lie at the interface between semantics and pragmatics, including presuppositions, implicature (conventional/conservational), intonational meaning, indexicality and speech act theory.
